得体のしれない何かが、人間のふりをしていることがある
幽霊や妖怪のようなものが大量に出る会社で働いていたことがありました。
その会社には、ガラス張りになっている部屋がありました。
私はその部屋が怖かったので、あまり近づかないようにしており、その部屋の担当のミカちゃんに用があっても、入らずに入口から声をかけていました。
その会社では、昼休みに電気を消します。
節電と、お昼休みにお昼寝をする人が多いためです。
電気が消えて暗い中、友人のナツミがその部屋の前を通りがかりました。
ガラス張りの部屋をみると、奥のすりガラスになっている辺りに、ミカちゃんの影が見えました。
昼休みもだいぶ過ぎているのに、仕事をしている様子です。
ナツミが入り口から声をかけました。
「ミカちゃん、お昼行かないの？」
と声をかけると
ミカちゃんは
「後で行くー」
と返事をしました。
その後、昼休みが終わり、気になったナツミが、先程のことをミカちゃんに聞きました。
すると
「え？昼休み始まってすぐに外に出てたよ」
との返事が。
じゃあ、あれは一体…？
しかも返事の声もミカちゃんだったそうです。
それから、ナツミは
「ミカちゃんの偽物が出る」
と言うようになりました。
私はミカちゃんの偽物なんて見たことがありませんでした。
私は自分が見たもの、感じたものしか信じないため、半信半疑でした。
よく考えると酷いですね。
私はナツミ以上におかしなことばかり言っているのに、ナツミはいつも優しく聞いてくれていましたし、私の感覚を否定することもありませんでした。
ナツミは、それから時々ミカちゃんの偽物を見ることがありました。
でも、直接姿を見ることはありませんでした。
すりガラスの向こうに見えたと思ったら、全く違う場所に本物のミカちゃんがいたり、「ナツミちゃん」と声をかけられたと思ったら、ミカちゃんはずっと遠くにいるなんてことが続きました。
ある時、私が例のガラス張りの部屋の前を通ると、クリアなガラスの向こうでミカちゃんが仕事をしているのが見えました。
私はそのまま通り過ぎ、ナツミの所へ行くと、そこにミカちゃんがいました。
慌てて振り返ると、先程のガラス張りの部屋には誰もいませんでした。
私を追い越さずに、先にナツミの所へいくのは不可能です。
こうして私もミカちゃんの偽物を見ることとなりました。

I once worked at a company where a large number of ghostly or yokai-like beings were said to appear.
There was a room in that office with glass walls.
I found that room unsettling, so I tried not to go near it. Even when I needed to speak to Mika, who was in charge of that room, I would call out to her from the doorway without going inside.
At that company, the lights were turned off during the lunch break.
This was partly to save electricity, and partly because many people liked to take naps during lunch.
One day, while the lights were off and the office was dark, my friend Natsumi happened to pass by that glass-walled room.
Looking inside, she saw Mika’s silhouette near the frosted glass at the back of the room.
Even though lunchtime was already well underway, it looked like Mika was still working.
From the doorway, Natsumi called out,
“Mika, aren’t you going to lunch?”
Mika replied,
“I’ll go later.”
After lunch break ended, Natsumi couldn’t stop thinking about it and asked Mika about what had happened earlier.
Mika responded,
“Huh? I went out as soon as lunch break started.”
So then… what had that been?
And the voice that answered her had sounded exactly like Mika’s.
After that, Natsumi started saying,
“A fake Mika shows up.”
I had never seen a fake Mika myself.
I only believe what I personally see or feel, so I was skeptical.
Looking back, that was rather unfair of me.
I say far stranger things than Natsumi ever did, yet she always listened kindly and never dismissed my perceptions.
After that, Natsumi occasionally continued to see Mika’s double.
However, she never saw it clearly.
She would think she saw Mika beyond the frosted glass, only to find the real Mika in a completely different place.
Or she would hear someone call out “Natsumi-chan,” only to realize that Mika was far away the entire time.
Then one day, as I walked past that same glass-walled room, I saw Mika working inside, clearly visible through the transparent glass.
I walked past without stopping and went to see Natsumi—
and Mika was already there.
Startled, I quickly turned around, but the glass-walled room was now empty.
There was no way Mika could have gone ahead of me without passing me.
That was how I, too, came to see Mika’s double.
